LUCAS -- He might be a resident of Oxnard, Calif., but Ben Caguioa was well aware of the Garden of Eden before ever visiting Kansas.

He's knee-deep into the garden now, serving as the art conservator for the Kohler Foundation, the Wisconsin-based group that purchased the famed Garden of Eden and is restoring it.


"It's a pretty famous site," he said.

His crew members all agreed, taking quick breaks in the 100-degree heat of late August, taking a sip of water or seeking refuge in the shade.

Caguioa has been in Lucas since May 6, first leading a group of interns in the cleaning and restoration project. The interns have left, and he's being aided by two Kohler employees who volunteered to travel to Kansas for the project.
